Sierra Alhamilla
The Natural Area Sierra Alhamilla is located in the municipalities of Almería, Lucainena for Torres, Nijar, Pechina, Rioja and Taverns of the province of Almeria. Its area amounts to 8,500 hectares. It was declared a Natural Area by Law 2 / 1989 of July 18, for approving the inventory of protected natural areas of Andalusia and establishing additional measures for their protection (No. BOJA. 60, 27/07/1989 ) is also a Special Protection Area for Birds [ZEPA (1989)], and is proposed as Sites of Community Interest (LIC).
This site is part of the sector of the Almeria coast of the Cordilleras Béticas next to the Sierra of Gador and Sierra Cabrera. Among the habitats represented in it, appear a sclerophyllous oak forest, a relic of the vegetation, in other times and under different weather conditions, it had extended through much of the territories of Almeria.
It is worth noting the presence of foxes, genets, wild boars, badgers and weasels, and highlight the uniqueness and diversity of bird species. Ornit communities out of raptors in general, the nesting of the step and within those preferably the forest, very rare in the province of Almeria. In general, the foothills is an area of exceptional significance to bird populations estepáricas being of singular interest as the runner support small migrations in spring and autumn-winter-summer, between the coastline and environment arid interior of the Trumpeter camachuelo.
