Piedra Lobera

At the eastern end of the Betic system of the province of Almeria, within the region of Alto Almanzora, is the Sierra de Lúcar. As it rises to a height of 1722 meters peak of the same name. This is a spectacular steep-walled limestone formation that stands in the landscape, forming a so-called geographic landmark "Piedra Lobera". Its name comes from the tradition that was in this place where the last specimen of wolves that existed in these mountains was exterminated .
Besides its scenic beauty, this Natural Monument is home to an important flora adapted to the harsh conditions in this environment: lack of rain, strong winds, long periods of sunshine, rocky soil and frequent frosts. Well appear as the exclusive species "Arenaria tomentosa", which grows between the rocks and has a note pad in order to counter the whipping wind, in addition to being covered with small hair to reflect the unrelenting sunlight, is also the "Madreselva del Pirineo" living away from the fissures and limestone, and exotic "Peonia", known as the Mount Rose, which is attributed medicinal properties, despite certain concentrations is toxic.
Near the Monument is located Lúcar village where visitors can walk the streets to admire the traditional architecture of their houses and visit the Church, the City or "El Arco del Balcón de Almanzora". A few kilometers away, in the parish of Cela, you can see the birth of a thermal spring waters that flow into the "Balsa de Cela" and where the traveler can take a nice bath.
