Isle of Alboran

The Isle of Alboran  is a Natural space who is an enclave in the sea and the land of outstanding ecological values that are attached to the town of Almeria. Comprising the territory of the Island of Alborán, the Isle of the cloud and the waters and seabed around it, with an area of 26,457 hectares. Geographically it is located halfway between the Spanish and African coasts, where waters of different characteristics, allowing the existence of a high biological diversity and productivity, with an area of the most diverse of the Mediterranean.

In the sea qe can see the bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), the deep sea, well preserved and enhanced by the confluence of water masses of Atlantic and Mediterranean, harbor valuable red coral formations (Corallium rubrum) and Coral Orange (Astroides calycularis) and dense forests of laminaria algae, whereas in the terrestrial and intertidal space, some species, such as stress Lapa ferruginea (Patella ferruginea) and Jaramago Alborán (Diplotaxis siettiana).

The Alboran Sea is also important passage for the migration of large cetaceans. The island of volcanic origin, hosts the main core of the Andalusian breeding Gaviota de Audouin (Larus audouinii), also serve as roosting and feeding area for many migratory birds.

By law this statement of natural area, is also designated as Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) Alborán Island.

Moreover, the island of Alborán and seabed are declared specially protected area of Mediterranean Importance (ZEPIM) and is proposed for inclusion in the Natura 2000 network as a Community Interest (LIC).
