Among the coastal towns of Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar is one of the few reefs of Posidonia still preserved in the Mediterranean coast, the Natural Monument Arrecife Barrea Posidonia. This is a unique jewel of this coast, which remains a stronghold of ancient reefs that once abounded in these shores.
This marine plant, known as Posidonia oceanica, has very special qualities. Presents a long and green leaf-shaped ribbon that can reach one meter in length. It holds the soil through a dense network of small stems and roots with which colonizes the funds. Its extensive coastal grasslands contribute to the determination of sediment and sand from the coast, forming a barrier that effectively prevents the loss of beach area.
Furthermore, these formations lives in a large community of marine fauna consisting of "peces", "camarones", "cangrejos" and "esponjas" to find a suitable place to shelter, feed and reproduce. This species is very demanding with respect to environmental conditions, requires clean water and oxygen in which there are no sudden changes of temperature and salinity, and of course they are not contaminated.
Near this spot is the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar, which has an outstanding natural and cultural heritage. Is known from the Neolithic settlements and the passage of civilizations as the Greek, Phoenician and Roman times. Last vestiges of it remain as "Tauriana", town located in "Los Bajos" in Roquetas, where you can also visit the "Castillo de Santa Ana".
